Ortigia and Siracusa have more to see than what the eye can immediately tell, and it is under your feet, underground. In the underground, you can explore many centuries of history between those walls, stories of cults, stories of tribute to the ancestors, stories of brotherhoods, stories of survival of wars. Join me to discover, what was for me, some of the most interesting places in Ortigia and Siracusa.

Saint Philip Church, Ortigia

Saint Philip Church is located in “via della Giudecca” (a former Jewish neighbourhood). At first, it was a Synagogue that was converted to a church in the XVIII century. If your time is limited in the area and you can only have one underground experience, I would recommend you to go to Saint Philip church for the variety of history associated within its three underground floors. Besides, for 2 or 3€, you have a guided tour and if you are travelling solo, they will not mind doing it only for you. Prepare yourself as you travel down three levels and 18 meters of history.

Most impressive, on the first level below the surface, are all the paintings on the walls, and particularly the skulls, as a reminder that death is the only certain thing. This level was used by the St Phillip Brotherhood for their rituals. There are two holes that were carved for these rituals. When a member of the Brotherhood died, they would use one of the carved holes, located on the floor, to pore in the blood of the deceased member and the other hole, also on the floor but close to some kind of altar, to deposit the deceased member’s bones. Only the members in a higher hierarchy would be buried separately. A little disturbing no? 😐

Going down, on the second level, we witness what was the shelter for 10.000 people during the Second World War to escape the bombings in the region. The walls still have many peoples’ inscriptions from those times, like drawings of aeroplanes and parachutes. Probably a way of coping during those terrifying moments and difficult conditions such as water dripping from the roof consistently. There are seats that were added during the time of war to provide more comfort whereas, before, there were only the wide tunnels that were created way way back: When building these huge an odd 2000 years ago, the Greeks used the stone that was excavated to build the city! Some tunnels were build for the purpose of a water system! Amazing. The tunnels are connected to the Cathedral Plaza and Syracuse.

Then, keep going down to the third level, 18 meters underground, where you will find the Jewish bath that is similar to a well. This level was a place where a ritual of purification would take place associated with the idea of cleaning blood – after giving birth or after menstruating, women would come here and lay in the water in a fetal position. The water flows from the mountains, so the bath is always fresh and clean.

 

Ipogeo (Ipogeo Di Piazza Duomo), Ortigia

At the Cathedral Plaza, close to Saint Lucy church, you will find another underground secret waiting to be revealed: more tunnels that served as a shelter during the bombings of the WW2 with an exit to the big harbour.

I did not have time to visit this one but as it is so close to the Duomo (central Ortigia), it can be a good option for you.

Catacombs of Saint John, the Christian Catacombs (Catacombe di S. Giovanni), Syracuse

One of the most impressive things about these catacombs is the size: they are really, really massive and a treasure with many hidden details just underneath the beautiful S. Giovanni church. The S. Giovanni church, a church from the XII century, was the first Cathedral of Syracuse. S. Giovanni church, unfortunately lost its roofs during an earthquake in the XVI century. The ticket also includes a guided tour, either way, no one is allowed to visit by themselves and taking photos is not allowed inside the catacombs, however you can take as many photos of the church as you like. The visit is worth it.

These catacombs were carved in the stone and were a huge underground cemetery for Christians that had to hide their religion, nonetheless you can also find monumental graves or sarcophagus. There are more than 10.000 graves but it is impossible to be completely sure of a number as some graves were reused, which is proven by the identifying overlapping paintings that are found on top of some graves.

Another curious thing about the catacombs is that part of the tunnels were used as an underground aqueduct by the ancient Greek. Moreover, you find many “rotunda” at the end of some tunnels which resemble a private chapel and are, in fact, wider openings in the tunnels, usually with a circular shape where people of higher importance or status would be buried. A woman who died on Santa Lucia’s day, the patron of Syracuse, was once buried there as well which proves that the cult to Saint Lucy is very ancient in Syracuse. Saint Lucy was a symbol of Christian resistance as she was murdered because of being a Christian, a murder ordered by the Diocletian Emperor (Diocletianic where the most severe times of the Christians’ persecution during the Roman Empire).

Moreover, the catacombs were also used as a shelter during the Second World War bombings for the allied forces, by that time all bones and human remains were moved to other resting places.

I definitely have to highlight the “Cripta de S. Marchiano”, another patron of Syracuse. The frescos painted on the crypt are really beautiful, some have faded with time but there are at least two or three that are still in good condition. Once again, it is really a pity that I was not allowed to take photos. The body of the saint was once buried there and people would come over to touch his body (the tomb had an opening on the side so that people could do just that), however the body was moved during the Arab occupation.

 

And these were the underground places I was able to visit, although it is said that all over Ortigia there are underground tunnels. Very mysterious isn’t it? Anyone out there that knows more secrets about this underground Ortigia and Syracuse? Please share them!

Por debaixo do solo em Ortigia e Siracusa

Ortigia e Siracusa têm muito mais do que aquilo que podemos ver imediatamente, e está debaixo dos nossos pés, debaixo do solo. Em paragens subterrâneas, e por entre aquelas paredes, podemos explorar muitos séculos de história, histórias de cultos, histórias de tributo aos antepassados, histórias de Irmandades, histórias de sobrevivência a guerras. Juntem-se a mim para descobrir aqueles que foram, para mim, alguns dos lugares mais interessantes e fascinantes em Ortigia e Siracusa.

Igreja de São Filipe, Ortigia

A Igreja de São Filipe localiza-se na “via della Giudecca” (num antigo Bairro Judeu). Primeiramente foi uma sinagoga, convertida em igreja no século XVIII. Se o teu tempo pela região é limitado, e apenas podes ter uma experiência no “subsolo”, aconselho-te a visitares a Igreja de São Filipe pela diversidade histórica que tem a si associada nos seus três pisos subterrâneos. Para além disso, por 2 ou 3€, tens incluída uma visita guiada e, mesmo que viajes sozinho, não se vão importar de fazer a visita guiada só para ti. Prepara-te porque há medida que vais descendo pelos três pisos vais mergulhando por 18 metros plenos de história.

Algo realmente impressionante, logo no primeiro nível abaixo da superfície, são as pinturas nas paredes, em especial as caveiras, como um lembrete de que a morte é a única coisa realmente certa. Este piso foi usada pela Irmandade de São Filipe para os seus rituais. Quando um membro da irmandade morresse, uma abertura esculpida no chão era usada para deitar o sangue do membro falecido, e outra abertura também esculpida no chão, junto a uma espécie de altar, era utilizada para depositar os ossos dos falecidos. Apenas os membros numa hierarquia mais alta eram enterrados separadamente. Um pouco perturbador não é? 😐

Descendo para o segundo nível, testemunhamos aquele que foi o refúgio de 10.000 pessoas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, escapando aos bombardeamentos na região. As paredes ainda têm várias inscrições desses tempos, como desenhos de aviões e paraquedas. Provavelmente uma forma de conseguir lidar com aqueles momentos aterradores e com as condições difíceis, como água constantemente a pingar do teto. Foram adicionados alguns assentos de cimento durante os tempos de guerra, de modo a possibilitar algum conforto naqueles que foram largos túneis criados muito, muito antes: recuando cerca de 2000 anos, os Gregos antigos construíram estes túneis e usaram a pedra retirada para construir a cidade! Alguns dos túneis foram ainda construídos com o propósito de criar um sistema de transporte de água! Incrível. Estes túneis estão ligados à Praça da Catedral e a Siracusa.

Depois, segue para o terceiro nível, 18 metros abaixo do solo, onde vais encontrar o banho Judeu, com um formato algo semelhante a um poço. Neste nível tinha lugar um ritual de purificação associado à ideia de limpeza do sangue – depois de dar à luz ou depois da menstruação as mulheres sentavam-se ali na água, em posição fetal. A água corre constantemente vinda das montanhas, por isso era um banho sempre fresco e limpo.

Ipogeo (Hipogeu da Praça da Catedral), Ortigia

Na Praça da Catedral, muito perto da Igreja de Santa Lúcia, encontramos outro segredo subterrâneo por revelar: mais túneis que serviram de abrigo durante os bombardeamentos da Segunda Guerra Mundial com saída para a baía.

Eu não tive tempo para visitar o Ipogeo mas se estiveres perto do Duomo, Ortigia central, pode ser uma boa opção para ti.

 

Catacumbas de São João, as catacumbas cristãs (Catacombe di S. Giovanni), Siracusa

Uma das coisas mais impressionantes destas catacumbas é o seu tamanho, pois elas são realmente enormes. São igualmente um tesouro escondido debaixo da bonita igreja de São João (Chiesa S. Giovanni). A Igreja de São João é do século XII e foi a primeira Catedral de Siracusa, perdeu, infelizmente, o seu telhado durante um terramoto no século XVI. O bilhete da visita também inclui uma visita guiada. De qualquer das formas, ninguém é autorizado a visitar as catacumbas fora da visita guiada, também não é possível tirar fotografias dentro das catacumbas, contudo podem tirar as fotografias que quiserem na Igreja. A visita na sua totalidade vale completamente a pena.

As catacumbas foram esculpidas na pedra e eram um gigantesco cemitério subterrâneo para milhares de cristãos que tiveram de esconder a sua religião. Nas catacumbas também é possível encontrar túmulos monumentais, isto é, sarcófagos. Existem mais de 10.000 túmulos nestas catacumbas, mas é impossível saber ao certo, uma vez que vários túmulos foram reutilizados, o que é comprovado pelas pinturas identificativas que se sobrepõem e que se encontram no topo de alguns túmulos.

Outro aspeto curioso das catacumbas é que parte dos túneis foram usados como aqueduto subterrâneo pelos Gregos antigos. Para além disso, são encontradas várias “rotunda” no final de alguns túneis que se assemelham a uma capela privada e se tratam, na realidade, de aberturas mais espaçosas nos túneis, habitualmente com uma forma circular, onde pessoas de um nível maior de importância ou status mais alto eram sepultadas. Uma mulher que morreu no dia de Santa Lúcia, a padroeira de Siracusa, foi também enterrada aqui, o que comprova que o culto em Siracusa a esta Santa remonta a muitos séculos atrás. Santa Lúcia era um símbolo da resistência cristã dado que ela foi assassinada por ser católica, um assassinato ordenado pelo Imperador Diocleciano (A Perseguição de Diocleciano ou a Grande Perseguição foram os tempos mais negros da Perseguição Cristã durante o Império Romano).

Para além disso, as catacumbas também foram utilizadas como refúgio durante os bombardeamentos das forças aliadas na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Nesse período, todas as ossadas e restos mortais foram movidos para outros locais de repouso.

E, sem dúvida, que tenho de destacar a “Cripta de S. Marchiano”, outro padroeiro de Siracusa. Os frescos pintados na cripta são lindíssimos, alguns deles desvaneceram com o tempo mas há ainda pelo menos dois ou três em boas condições. Mais uma vez, relembro-vos como tenho pena de não ter tido permissão para tirar fotografias… O corpo deste santo esteve outrora ali sepultado e muitas seriam as pessoas que ali se deslocavam em peregrinação para lhe poder tocar (o sepulcro tinha uma abertura de um dos lados para que as pessoas o pudessem fazer), contudo o corpo foi movido durante a ocupação árabe.

 

E estes foram os locais debaixo de terra que eu pude visitar, embora se diga que toda a ilha de Ortigia é composta por túneis subterrâneos. Muito misterioso, não é verdade? Há por aí alguém que conheça mais segredos sobre a Ortigia e Siracusa subterrâneas? Por favor partilhem-nos!
