Dropped by for a quick visit in Ortigia? In this post, we will let you in on some of the best spots not to miss on the Island!
1. Cathedral of Ortigia and the Temple of Minerva (“Duomo, Tempio di Minerva”) / Artemision Jonic temple (“Tempio Jonico”)
The plaza of Ortigia’s Cathedral is a must stop! It is surrounded by magnificent buildings and palaces. It is truly majestic and an awesome spot to just sit for a while and admire the beauty of the place, anytime of the day.
Morover, its Baroque facade covers a Doric temple to Atena from the V century before Christ (if you enter inside, which is totally worth it as it is a beautiful cathedral, you will be able to see the Doric columns). The temple was transformed into a church in the VII century.
Additionally, remember to pass by Saint Lucy Church (“Chiesa di Santa Lucia allabadia”) to admire Caravaggio’s painting in honour of Siracusa’s patroness (no pictures allowed).
2. Temple of Apollo (“Tempio di Apollo”)
Built in 575 B. C., this is one of the most important ancient Greek monuments in Ortigia. It is amazing how we can still see the ruins of this Doric temple. There are two columns of sandstone that still remain standing. You can admire it at any time as it is in an open space in front of Piazza Pancali.
3. Fountain Diana (“Fontana Diana”)
Located in “Piazza Archimede”, this is a fountain from the beginning of the XX century with really beautiful sculptures. Diana was considered the protector of Ortigia during the Greek era. The transformation of Arethusa, from woman into a natural water source, is also captured in the sculpting.
Take your time to observe the water flowing and the realism of the sculptures and their expressions.
4. Fountain of Arethusa (“Fonte Aretusa”)
The mystical figure of Arethusa was transformed into this natural fountain and here she is in Ortigia! There are lots of fish and ducks at the source, but most admirable of all: papyrus! The plant can only survive in sweet water, quite amazing because it is so close to the ocean! Actually, the Fountain of Arethusa and the river Fiume Freddo, also in Sicily, are maybe the only two places in Europe where papyrus grows.
5. Food! (as for all over Italy)
Ooooh, there is so much to say about food… I will leave it for another post 😄
A good advice that I can always give is to refill energies with a proper Italian ice-cream during your walks 😉
6. Boat trip along the coast and visit to the caves
It is an amazing view to see Ortigia historic centre from the ocean. At the marina and by the bridge you find plenty of companies offering this service. Then, you sail to fascinating sea caves, one was even heart shaped (and a young man took the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend on the boat, just in front of this cave. Simply amazing!). If you are lucky, you are also able to see some corals. The colours of the rocks are simply amazing.
So, the trip is about 90 minutes and during the last minutes of the tour you can dive into the deep green-blue Mediterranean Sea and take a refreshing dip.
7. Maniace Castle (“Castello Maniace”)
You will find the Maniace Castle in the southern tip of the Island. The castle was built in the XIII century and is named after George Maniakes, a Byzantine general who expelled the Arabs from Syracuse in the XI century.
Used in the past as a home, a prison or a place of battle, and today it now is possible to visit this castle and venture inside.
8. Underground Ortigia
Furthermore, in Ortigia, history is everywhere and in the open, yet there is even more history underground with many tunnels, ancient graves and even a Jewish bath. There is so much to discover below the surface that I will also have to leave this topic for a future post. Stay tuned!

Por Ortigia para uma visita rápida? Neste post vamos abrir as portas para alguns dos melhores lugares a não perder na visita à Ilha!

Catedral de Ortigia e Templo de Minerva (“Duomo, Tempio di Minerva”) / Templo Jónico (“Tempio Jonico”)
A praça da Catedral de Ortigia é de paragem obrigatória! É rodeada por edifícios e palácios deslumbrantes, um local verdadeiramente majestoso e um ponto ideal para nos sentarmos a admirar a beleza do local a qualquer hora do dia.
A fachada barroca da catedral cobre um templo Dórico do século V a.C. dedicado à Deusa Atena (se entrarem dentro da Catedral, o que vale totalmente a pena, as colunas dóricas estarão bem visíveis do lado esquerdo). O templo foi transformado em igreja no século VII.
Situada também nesta praça está a igreja de Santa Lúcia (“Chiesa di Santa Lucia allabadia”) onde poderão admirar a pintura de Caravaggio em honra desta patrona de Siracura (não são permitidas fotografias).

Templo de Apolo (“Tempio di Apollo”)
Contruído em 575 a.C., este é um dos mais importantes monumentos dos Gregos antigos deixados em Ortigia. É realmente incrível como ainda podemos admirar as ruínas deste Templo Dórico. Ainda há duas colunas de arenito que se mantêm totalmente de pé. O Templo pode ser admirado a qualquer momento, pois encontra-se em espaço aberto mesmo em frente à Piazza Pancali.

Fonte de Diana (“Fontana Diana”)
Localizada na “Piazza Archimede”, esta é uma fonte do início do século XX com esculturas realmente belíssimas. Diana está na posição central – Diana era considerada a protetora de Ortigia durante a era Grega. Está, ainda, captada na escultura a transformação de Aretusa de mulher para nascente de água.
Passem aqui alguns minutos vagarosos para observar o fluir da água, o realismo das esculturas e as suas expressões.

Fonte Aretusa
A figura mítica da Aretusa foi transformada nesta fonte natural e aqui está ela em Ortigia! A fonte está repleta de peixes e patos, mas o mais surpreendente de tudo: de papiro! Esta planta só pode sobreviver em água doce, impressionante quando estamos tão próximos do oceano. Na verdade, a Fonte Aretusa e o Rio Fiume Freddo, também na Sicília, são talvez os únicos locais na Europa onde o papiro cresce.

Passeio de barco pela costa e visita às grutas
Uma das melhores vistas para o centro histórico de Ortigia é a partir do mar. Na marina ou na ponte antiga podes encontrar várias empresas que oferecem este serviço. Vais, então, navegar para grutas marítimas de grande beleza, uma delas até em forma de coração (um jovem até aproveitou esta oportunidade para pedir a sua namorada em casamento no barco, mesmo em frente a esta gruta. Maravilhoso!). Com um pouco de sorte, a visibilidade também estará excelente para ver alguns corais no fundo das grutas. As cores das rochas são simplesmente fantásticas!
A viagem é de cerca de 90 minutos e durante os últimos minutos poderás refrescar-te com um mergulho nas profundas águas verde-azul do Mar Mediterrâneo.

Castelo Maniace (“Castello Maniace”)
O Castelo Maniace encontra-se na ponta sul da Ilha, foi construído no século XIII e deve o seu nome a George Maniakes, um general Bizantino que expulsou os árabes de Siracusa no século XI.
No passado foi usado como residência, prisão ou local de batalha, hoje podemos entrar e visitá-lo, mergulhando por séculos de história.
Em Ortigia encontramos história em cada canto em aberto, ainda assim existe mais história a explorar no subterrâneo! Com vários túneis, túmulos antigos e até um banho judeu! Há tanto a descobrir abaixo da superfície, que vou deixar este tópico também para um próximo post.
